Garbage in and Garbage out (Part - 3)

Garbage in and Garbage out (Part - 3)

Q.15. What do we mean by 4R’s method to deal with the non-biodegradable garbage?

Ans. We can expand the 4R's method as:

Recycle: collecting waste materials and processing them to make new products.

Reuse: reuse whatever can be for other purposes.

Reduce: minimize the use of the material which is difficult to get disposed off.

Refuse: strictly refuse/ban the use of such material which is difficult to get disposed off and is harmful to environment as well.

Q.16. Plastic is a boon or a curse. Justify.

Ans. Plastic as a boon: Plastic has some special features like it is cheap in cost, light in weight and durable in comparison to other materials. So, the list of materials made from plastics is generally very long like Toys, shoes, bags, pens, combs, tooth brushes, buckets, bottles, and water pipes etc.

Plastic as a curse: Problems with plastics arise when we use plastics excessively and are ignorant about ways of disposing their waste. Some common problems with plastics include:

  • All kind of plastics give out harmful gases, upon heating or burning. These gases may cause many health problems, including cancer, in humans.
  • On dumping it in soil, it can block the circulation of air and water in the soil which can kill the organisms living in the soil and hence it affects the fertility and quality of the soil.
  • People often fill garbage in plastic bags and then throw it away. When stray animals look for food in these bags, they end up swallowing these. Sometimes, they die due to this.
  • The plastic bags thrown away carelessly on roads and other places get into drains and the sewer system. As a result, drains get choked and the water spills on the roads. During heavy rains, it might even create a flood like situation.
  • Consuming food packed in plastic bags could be harmful to our health.

Q.17. What can we do to minimise over use of plastics and deal with garbage?

Ans. We should try the following:

  • We should make a minimum use of plastic bags. We should re-use the bags whenever it is possible to do so without any adverse affects.
  • We should insist shopkeepers use paper bags. We should carry a cloth or a jute bag when we go out for shopping.
  • We should not use plastic bags to store eatables.
  • We should not throw plastic bags here and there, after use.
  • We should never burn plastic bags and other plastic items.
  • We should not put garbage in plastic bags and throw it away.
  • We should use vermicomposting at home and deal with our kitchen waste usefully.
  • We should recycle paper.
  • We should use both sides of the paper to write. We should use a slate for rough work. We should use blank sheets of paper left in our notebooks for rough work.
  • We should make our family, friends and others to follow proper practices for disposing different kinds of wastes.
