Q.14. What does edible mean?

Ans.

      Edible comes from a latin word (edere) which means to eat. So something fit to be eaten is called edible.

      Do not try to test unknown plants around you to see if they are edible. Some plants are poisonous (not fit for eating).

Q.15. Name some plant roots which are eaten as food?

Ans. Some plants store food in their roots (which are actually modified roots). For example, carrot, radish, beetroot, sweet potato, turnip.

Q.16. Name some plant stems which are eaten as food?

Ans. Some plants store food in their stems (which are actually modified, underground stems). For example, onion, potato, ginger, garlic, turmeric.

Q.17. Name some plant leaves which are eaten as food?

Ans. Some plants store food in their leaves. For example, spinach, cabbage, lettuce, leaves of mustard plant.

Q.18. Name some plant flowers which are eaten as food?

Ans. The flowers of some of the plants are eaten as food. For example: flowers of banana plant, pumpkin plant, sunflower, Jasmine, gladiolus, dandelion.

Q.19. Name some plant fruits which are eaten as food?

Ans. There are some plants which store food in their fruits. We eat the fruits of such plants as food. For example: apple, orange, mango, pears, banana, plum, grapes, guava.

Q.20. Name some plant seeds which are eaten as food?

Ans. Some of the plants store food in their seeds. We eat the seeds of these plants as food. For eg: wheat, rice Maize, millet, Peas, pulses, mustard, groundnut, soyabean.

Groundnut and mustard seeds are called oilseeds because they are used to extract edible oils which are used for cooking food.

 Q.21. Name some plants which have more than one edible part in them.

Ans. Examples of plants which have more than one edible parts in them are-

      Banana- stem, flowers, fruits.

      Methi (fenu greek seeds)- stem, seeds, leaves.

      Coconut- Coconut oil which is extracted from the dried seeds, coconut and coconut water.

      Mustard-Leaves are used as leafy vegetable; Seeds of mustard plant are used to extract mustard oil.

Q.22. Name any one plant that grows in water and is eaten as food.

Ans. Lotus — Stem of lotus is eaten as food.

Q.23.What is honey? Make a flow chart for the preparation of honey.

Ans. A sweet substance (liquid) prepared by bees from the nectar, i.e., sweet juice collected from flowers is called honey.

Q.24. Describe the process of making sprouts.

Ans. When the seeds begin to grow by developing tiny roots, they are called sprouts.

The sprouts contain more of Vitamin A, B, and C which makes them a more nutritious food.

The method of making sprouts from seeds is called sprouting.

The seeds of moong, chana are usually converted into sprouts in our homes.

1) Some dry seeds of Moong /chana.

2) Put a small quantity of seeds in a container filled with water and leave this aside for a day.

3) Next day, drain the water completely and leave the seeds in the vessel.

4) Wrap them with a piece of wet cloth and set aside for one day. Water should be sprinkled time to time to keep it wet.

5) A white structure may have grown out of the seed. This is called sprout.

Q.25. What are herbivores. Give examples.

Ans. The animals which eat only plants or plant products are called herbivores. For example, Cow, Goat, Horse, Deer, Rhinoceros, Sheep.

Q.26. What are carnivores? Give examples.

Ans. The-animals which eat other animals are called carnivores. For example, Lions, tigers, Spiders, Venus fly-trap, Eagles, Owls, Many species of beetles, Sharks.

Q.27. What are omnivores. Give examples.

Ans. The animals which eat both the plants and animals are called omnivores. For example, Cat, Dog, Human being, Pig, Rat, Bear, Squirrel.

Q.28. Why do green plants termed as 'food producers'?

Ans. Green plants carry green coloured pigment called 'chlorophyll' in them and they make their own food by the process of Photosynthesis by combining water (and nutrients like nitrogen), carbon dioxide gas and energy.

They get carbon dioxide gas from air, water and nutrients from roots, energy from sunlight for photosynthesis.
