Weather, Climate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate (Part - 1)

WeatherClimate and Adaptations of Animals to Climate

Q.1. Which department of the Government prepares the weather reports.

Ans. The weather reports are prepared by the Meteorological Department of the Government. This department collects data on temperature, wind, etc., and makes the weather prediction.

Q.2. Differentiate between weather and climate.

Ans.

Weather

Climate

It is the day to day condition of the atmosphere at a place at a particular time.

It is the average weather pattern taken over a long period of time.

It can vary over very short periods of time.

It does not vary in short periods.

It cannot force adaptations in the organisms.

It forces adaptations in the organisms.

Q.3. Define:

a) Weather

b)Humidity

Ans. a) It is the day to day condition of the atmosphere at a place at a particular time.

        b) Humidity is the concentration of water vapor present in the air.

Q.4. a) Name the instrument which measures rainfall.

        b) What causes all changes in the weather?

Ans. a) The instrument which measures rainfall is rain gauge. It is basically a measuring cylinder with a funnel on top to collect rainwater.

    b) All changes in the weather are caused by the heat energy of the sun absorbed and reflected by the earth’s surface, oceans and the atmosphere.

Q.5. At what time of the day/night the temperature at any place is :

A) Maximum?

B) Minimum?

Name the instrument used for recording maximum & minimum temperature of the day.

Ans. The maximum temperature of the day occurs generally in the afternoon while the minimum temperature occurs generally in the early morning.

There are special thermometers for this purpose, called maximum and minimum thermometers.

Q.6. Mention the various factors that affect the weather at a particular region? On the  other hand, what are the factors that affect the climate of a region?

Ans. The day- to-day condition of the atmosphere at a place with respect to the temperature, humidity, rainfall, wind- speed, etc affect the weather at a particular region.

There are six major controls of the climate of any place. They are: latitude, altitude, pressure and wind system, distance from the sea (continentality), ocean currents and relief features.

Q.7.Differentiate between the climate of Kerala and Rajasthan.

Ans. The climate of Kerala is very hot and wet as Kerala have coastal regions while the climate of  Rajasthan is hot and dry as Rajasthan is a desert area and do not get much rainfall.
